26th Annual Roundup Nationals – Springfield, Illinois

For our 26th Annual Roundup Nationals, the MCCI moves the Roundup Nationals 748 miles to Illinois, the 8th different state to host a Roundup Nationals.  For 2019, the host city will be Springfield, Illinois.  First settled in the 1810’s, Springfield is the Illinois state capitol, and is best known for historic sites connected with the 16th US President Abraham Lincoln, as well as being located on historic Route 66.

 

Wednesday, July 24, 2019:  Early Arrival Day & Day Cruise - Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, 15588 History Lane, Petersburg, IL 62675.  About 20 miles Northwest of Springfield, is a reconstruction of the village where Abraham Lincoln spent his early adulthood.  No admission fee, just a suggested donation of $2.00 for children, $4.00 for adults, or $10.00 for a family.   30 minutes from hotel.  Leave hotel at 1:15.  Arrive for 2:00pm tour.       http://www.LincolnsNewSalem.com

 

Thursday, July 25, 2019:  Family Day & Day Cruise #1 – Route 66.   We will spend the day taking in some great Route 66 sites in the area.  The gas stations, some museums and must see sites, and the food.

Leave hotel at 10:00am and head to the Route 66 Museum, 334 Historic Old Route 66 North, Litchfield, IL  62056.  The museum is located where the Vic Suhling gas station once stood. The retro design of the building, with exterior neon trim and restored neon Suhling sign welcomes visitors. The museum houses historical artifacts of Litchfield and showcases Litchfield’s relationship with Route 66.  Litchfield is 30 minutes from motel.  Donation to enter.                http://www.litchfieldmuseum.org/

After the museum, head to lunch at Aristons, 413 N Old Rte 66, Litchfield, IL  62056 .  Aristons in Litchfield is Route 66 famous, and is believed to be the oldest café on Route 66.  Their menu incorporates a world of influences, including Italian, Western Favorites, Southern Traditions, South of the Border, and Ocean Catches.  After dining, try one of their yummy desserts.  Aristons has been inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame, as well as placed on the National Registry of Historic Places.    http://ariston-cafe.com/

After lunch, go to Mt Olive, Illinois to Soulsby Service Station, 710 W 1st S St, Mt Olive, IL  62069. The Soulsby Service Station is a historic service station located along historic U.S. Route 66 and is the oldest usable service station on the highway in Illinois. It serves as an example of the house and canopy gas station design.  Today, the station looks essentially the same as it did during its post-World War II heyday. Friday, July 26, 2019:  Family Day & Day Cruise #1 – Springfield, Illinois.  We will spend the afternoon touring some of President Lincoln’s historic sites in the capital city:  Lincoln Home National Historic Site and the Lincoln Tomb.  We start off the day cruise by visiting the Lincoln Home National Historic Site, 426 South Seventh Street, Springfield, IL  62701.  Leave hotel at 1:15pm.  Tour starts at 1:40pm.  Lincoln Home National Historic Site was authorized by President Richard Nixon to preserve and protect the only home ever owned by President Abraham Lincoln. In total, the buildings included in the park make up four-and-a-half square blocks on 12 acres, where Abraham Lincoln lived from 1844 to 1861, before becoming the 16th President of the United States.  Our activities will include watching a movie and one hour guided tour.  The Lincoln Home Visitor Center parking lot fee is $2.00 per hour per vehicle.  Street parking 50 cents an hour (meters).  Museum is donation to enter.  Less than 5 miles from hotel.      https://www.nps.gov/liho/index.htm

We will leave the Lincoln Home at 3:00pm then drive a few blocks to Oak Ridge Cemetery and visit Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site, 1441 Monument Ave, Springfield, IL 62702.  Tour starts at 3:20pm.  The Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site is the final resting place of Abraham Lincoln, his wife Mary, and three of their four sons.   We will participate in a 30 minute guided tour.   Donation to enter.  After visiting the Lincoln Tomb, we will view the WWII Illinois Veterans Memorial, Illinois Korean War Memorial,  Illinois Vietnam Veterans War Memorial and the Purple Heart Memorial, all located outdoors near Lincoln Tomb.    http://www.LincolnTomb.org                   http://www.OakRidgeCemetery.org
